Excursions to the outskirts of Vienna

Vienna woods-southern part

This trip takes us to the nicest and most famous part of the Vienna woods. We visit the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, pass by the former hunting lodge in Mayerling where Crown Prince Rudolf died under mysterious circumstances with his mistress in the year 1889.

After a drive through the romantic valley Helenental, we arrive in Baden, the spa town, where we take a short city walk.

On the way back to Vienna, we pass by the vine-covered hills of Gumpoldskirchen, with its famous wine taverns.

Romantic Wachau-Danube Valley

This full-day excursion leads us by bus to the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, a pearl of the Austrian baroque style.

After a guided tour in the abbey, we continue to the Wachau-valley, UNESCO Cultural Heritage site and world-famous for its picturesque landscape, its delicious apricots and its great white wines. (A boat ride between Melk and Dürnstein can be arranged). During our stop in Dürnstein, where King Richard the Lionheart had been imprisoned, we walk through the tiny medieval village.

On the way back to Vienna, we pass by the town of Krems (my former home-town).

Local culinary offerings

  • Get some bread rolls (Wachauer Laberl) at the bakery Schmidl in Dürnstein
  • The best white wine, to my taste, is the "Grüner Veltliner Federspiel" from the Wachau Valley

Burgenland

Our first stop will be the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, the capital of the Burgenland, where the famous composer Joseph Haydn lived and worked.

Subsequently, our little cruise on the Lake Neusiedl brings us close to the Austro-Hungarian border, and we enjoy the mystic atmosphere of the steppe-type-lake, a nature reserve.

There is a choice of barbecuing on board of the boat or a horse-carriage ride through the reed, or a wine tasting.

Before returning to Vienna, we stop in Rust, a picturesque wine-growers village, where you may wish to taste the local wine in a traditional cellar.
